How do i make large custom desktop icons? - custom large desktop icons

I have Windows Vista and when I right click on desktop and you will see large icons icons and then some very large and beautiful as Firefox, my program Pepakura, Adobe, etc.. I wonder how I can make great symbols of this? AWicons but even if I tried to make it narrower than 256x256, and stuck a huge transparent border around them, they do not grow like everyone else. Help please?
